New home inspector - what to say if I don't know...

Ok. So I will be starting my business this spring. I am concerned that I will have an inquisitive client and am a little worried I will get cornered with questions, and may not have the answer. Does anybody have any ideas of a safe way to handle this situation until I gain more experience? A standard thing to say perhaps, like “I’ll need to look into this and i will include in my report.” Rookie question for sure, but thanks!

The answer…

I don’t recall at the moment , but I’ll get back to you with the answer.

Perfect. Thanks a bunch!

“I’m not sure off the top of my head, but when I get back to my office, I’ll research and confer with some of my colleagues and get back to you.”

Saying what you don’t know but committing to follow-up on it builds credibility.
