I can’t find anything in the IRC that says this is not allowed. :cr

One way to look at it…it’s a built in safety device for those nights you’ve’e had one too many! You’d only fall down 2 steps if the door was closed, instead of all the way to the bottom icon_question.gif

Besides John, your getting way to picky... It's got a handrail, a light above the steps and even a door stopper. What more do you want?

Well I’ve never noticed, but I’m not sure what the IRC says would actually apply to this particular case.

R311.5.4 Landings for stairways
There shall be a floor or landing at the top and bottom of each stairway.

Exception: A floor or landing is not required at the top of an interior flight of stairs, provided a door does not swing over the stairs.

All of the ones I've seen were at the top of the stairs, but these aren't. The intent of the rule seems clear, but the letter of it is fuzzy.

Hi Brian,

Yes, that's the section in the IRC that I eventually referenced. The door swings out over the stairs so I figure it requires a landing.

You would think this one would be a little more cut and dry.

John,

I can't remember exactly where I saw it but I believe what you are referring to is referenced in National Fire Protection Association. They publish the Life Safety Code.

Good luck and let us know!

Hmmmm ... under the IRC since the door swings out over the stairs, a landing would be required at the top of the stairs ... looks okay to me ...

Seriously though, part of the reason for the model code provision is it's difficult to safely open a door swinging towards you when you are standing on steps. Definitely a safety concern ...
