New Reports Support the Need for Foundation's Grant

Fema has recently released some new reports on fatal fires which support many of the risk assesments that the grant proposal developed by the Foundation is based on.

Our risk assesment determined amongst other things that the deaf and hard of hearing are at great risk because: A. Many live in poverty due in part to their hearing impairment, B. That fact prevents them from purchasing smoke alarms to protect them, C. Those smoke alarms are of utmost importance.

New reports once again indicate the importance of smoke alarms in general. Smoke alarms were present in 58% of fatal fires, but only operational in 38%. That statistic alone shows that fatal fires are more likely in home without smoke alarms. Not they were present in only 58%, but studies show 90% of american homes have smoke alarms.

Which leads into why that is. Part of it is likely income. The newest reports also show that those living in poverty are more at risk of fires. The report shows that socio-economic factors play a large role in fire risk. The wealthiest have one of the lowest risks conversely. Those living in the south have higher risk than thos living in the North east.

There are various reasons behind these facts. The poor may consider $5 for a cheap smoke alarm as an expense they can spend to feed their kids. The poor may also use unsafe methods to heat or light their homes because of lack of money. Those in the south more often use portable heating devices, whereas those in the Northeast usually have fixed systems.

These studies back up our risk assesment that the deaf who are often living in poverty and often have no smoke alarms for the deaf, are one of the biggest risk groups.

Please support our grant proposal, and contact me for ways you can help with the program.

Sorry Dan,

what is the proposal?

BTW
here in NH there is a bill in house which will require all
sellers of residential homes to disclose when smoke
detectors were hardwire installed as part of the disclosure
prior to sale of the property. Huge!
