Did you try the setting labeled supplemental heat?

So after further inspection I realized that the thermostat does have the supplemental heat option as was pointed out and that worked fine. However the top of the thermostat had no way to switch manually between heating and cooling modes of the heat pump. The heat and cooling temperatures were linked (adjust one and the other is adjusted). It was designed to automatically switch between the two modes. Strange design.

Is this another lever? What did it do?
The one on the right is cold air, the one on left is heat. But when you move one the other moves in tandem.
