On this July 4th, remember the French who liberated us.

There would be no USA without the French. The French spent every last penny they had backing us in the Revolutionary War, they even went into debt supporting us. They sent us uniforms, boots, cannons, muskets, supplies, and military advice. 90% of the rebels’ gunpowder was supplied by France as was nearly every cannonball.

The English sent over a total of 40,000 worn out (many called out of retirement) troops to put down the rebellion. The French used 300,000 troops to back George Washington. Let me say that again… the French dedicated 300,000 troops to help us beat 40,000 English.

The Revolutionary War is a classic “David vs. Goliath” story… but we were the Goliath and we won, thanks to France.

Just a bit off on your numbers Nick. There were between 12,000 and 15,000 French fighting here to assist us. There were another 50,000+ fighting the British in Europe.

When the French joined the U.S. in it’s war against Britain, they put 300,000 troops behind the effort (not 50,000): http://books.google.com/books?id=zAsnJ4hU974C&pg=PA627&dq=French+army+size+1780&hl=en&sa=X&ei=F6f_UJamOqbNiwLawIDYAg&ved=0CEIQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=French%20army%20size%201780&f=false You are correct that they weren’t all on U.S. soil. They fought the British from all sides. The French Navy even fought the British in the Atlantic ocean to keep them from getting to the U.S.

And the French were fighting on numerous fronts, some decidedly tied to the American Revolution and some not. Your argument would be like saying because there are 1.2 million US troops, they are all fighting the war in Afghanistan, and yet there are only 34,000 physically there. We are in numerous theaters just as the French were during the late 18th century. By 1794, their army had grown to 500,000 due to forced service and their own French Revolution.

Not to say the French were not instrumental in helping us win the Revolutionary War, just not to the numbers you are stating.

You are correct, it wasn’t all in the states. 300,000 of their 500,000 troops were fighting the British (on some front somewhere) during our Revolutionary War. That’s 10 times the size of the entire Continental Army that was fighting the British. You can almost say that we “helped out the French” with the Revolutionary War, and you’d be mostly right.

BTW: I love your Afghanistan analogy Stephen. History sure repeats itself.

No offense to the patriotic insurgents (rebels) in Afghanistan who are fighting a more powerful foreign enemy that has invaded their homeland… as opposed to the rebels (insurgents) of the Revolutionary War who, lead by that traitor George Washington, took up arms against their own government.

Anyway, I’m glad the unelected traitor and his uninformed insurgents, using guerrilla warfare tactics and help from the French… succeeded. :stuck_out_tongue: Happy 4th of July.
