I was thinking – just thinking. Is it better to begin HI through a franchise where you’ll get referral clients or go out on your own? From what I’ve read, it can take a few years until you build a reputation. Any comments would be appreciated.

Both ways have pro’s and con’s read up on both. There is a lot of information just on this board alone about this subject, No matter what you chose be prepared to work hard, long hours and in the first few years at minimum not make a lot of money. But most of all join NACHI so you can get the best of the best, answers to a lot of questions from some of the smartest people and not to mention the most giving and willing to help. Good luck, best wishes and DO NOT think this is a get rich quick profession, for if you do you will be gone within a year.

Tom the advantages of working for a franchise are:

training
work provided
uniforms
insurance
401K
possible gas allowance
marketing support
paid vacation

Disadvantages:

split fee (not even 50-50)
work whether you want to or not
having a boss

All depends on your comfort level.

Now…Having that said you can get the same deal working for Home Depot. Only person who can really answer that question is you. Depends if you want to work for someone else or want to work for yourself. As someone said…Research it, and be prepared to work hard at first. This line of work isn’t for the faint of heart. It is fun but its tuff getting started as most of the people here will attest to.
