Excellent picture. I am putting a copy of it in my notebook I carry with me that is full of similar photos of what can happen when small things go without being repaired. I run across folks who say “its just a little nail hole” This illustrates perfectly what it could become. Thanks

It appears the damage to the roof boards was caused by a fire not the nail hole. It looks like a badly charred piece of wood fell out with nail still attached to it.

It looks charred but it is brown wood rot, caused by a steady supply of water. I see it all the time here especially in older homes with open eaves and roof planking like you see here.

Let me guess, this was a flat roof with access from the kitchen above and this blonde occupant pitched a tent cover to stay out of the harmful rays of the sun. The deck miniature pool also leaked bad.
