I have a counter outlet next to a gas stove. Top recepticle shows reverse polarity and bottom recepticle shows open ground. Checked it with both three pronged tester and neon bulb tester. How is this possible?

Often counter top outlets are “split” meaning the top half and bottom half are on separate circuits and operate independently of each other. It is possible that the entire duplex is ungrounded as they normally share a ground but most testers can only show one problem at a time.

Anyway the fix is easy, point out both problems, recommend a licensed electrician be consulted and move on.
