Question: Panel rating is 125 amp max, main shutoff breaker was 100 amps, and a 40 amp breaker for laundry room. Does this officially add up to too many amps?? Oh I can add by the way…

Nope. the sum total of breakers in the panel is irrelevant to the total of service.

HOWEVER, some panels state that there is max total for a breaker type per leg. So you'd have to add up the amperage rating for those types of breakers.

I have double poles for a 100 (heat pump), a 30 (dryer) and a 20 (WH), so that's 150 right there.

My panel, for example (200a service) says the max amperage per leg for type QT breakers is 125 amps. If I had all QT breakers, I could have 250 amps worth of breakers and still be within specs.

I guess the idea is that these won't all be fully used at the same time.
