If I had a say in this stuff, I’d be VERY against using this type of source.

Nothing is free, and my thoughts are they’re looking for referrals from the inspectors. This is the type of association that can discredit the the org. and the very profession itself.

The reputation and motives of the profession should remain absolutely pristine, with no hint of impropriety.

While they didn't come right out and ask for it, they look forward to being "partners" with NACHI.

I have to go rinse this bad taste out of my mouth.

While I think Chad went too far, I would think in general that an HI should not be partnering with a foundation waterproofing company … or any contractor.

Foundation water penetration problems are sometimes not really such a big deal or caused by simple things that are easy for a homeowner to fix ... like incorrect roof drainage, poor downspout terminations, and improper surface grading to name a few. Sometimes they are caused by high groundwater or there may be conditions where any significant water penetration could be a concern, in which case calling in a contractor to install expensive things like waterproofing and french drains may be appropriate ... or maybe a combination of some more economical options.

That evaluation and call should be made by a qualified design professional. Yes, I get a little touchy there as an engineer myself, but I have been on the homeowners side of a very expensive proposal to waterproof a foundation that was never done as only surface/roof drainage improvements were needed. I don't think that is usually the case, but I feel pretty strongly that an HI should instead partner with a good engineer.

[P.S. I also actually had a potential buyer for a house I sold tell me thier HI said the basement foundation needed very expensive waterproofing due to some minor water penetration in an unfinished portion that didn't have a wall coating (like in the finished portion). I told them that I was a licensed building engineer and HI also, and they should go stuff a duck. The buyer's HI changed his report, and the proposal from the waterproofing company went away real quick ... ![icon_lol.gif](upload://zEgbBCXRskkCTwEux7Bi20ZySza.gif) ]

Reminder:

If my name isn't at the bottom of a post, a letter, or whatever, then I didn't write it. I do post things on our message board that others send me.

Okay Nick … understood. I just think HI’s need to be carefull there … a potentially slippery slope.
