process for buying a used boat

I hate posting questions for things I already know the answer to but I want to generate some discussion (and hopefully someone will see this thread and be forewarned about a shady boat deal on a 2013 Sea Hunt Ultra 234 that is for sale in NC ).

Would anyone cut a check to a seller for the full amount while knowing they have a loan on the boat? This of course means that you will not drive away with the title after forking over your money.

I did it this way. Put a lock on the boat hitch. We then met at the sellers bank. I paid the bank the full sales amount, the bank handed him the title which he signed and gave to me. The back handed him a cashiers check for the balance of the transaction.

Momma didn’t raise no fool.

Boats are too damn expensive to own.
I rent and accept invitations.
That’s the way to do it.
