Good question ... but since it was described as just standing water with no mention of it being odorous, it can be taken that it is not ...

it was described as "signs" of standing water.

... maybe it was actually toxic waste that had evaporated.

The depressed area is well away from the building, so the concern is not the grading or effect it may have on the building. However, a clearly depressed area at that distance from the building may indeed be a classic sign of a septic structure (or other buried structure, like a drywell) beginning to fail from cave-ins.
