Physical Description: These insects are typically small, with a robust, wedge-shaped body. Adults measure about 6-9 mm in length. They are characterized by distinct, bright yellow or orange bands across their dark bodies, often along the wings. The body color is generally black or dark brown.
Habitat: Froghoppers are commonly found in grassy areas, meadows, gardens, and lawns, particularly where their host plants are abundant. They are found in the southeastern United States, including Florida.
Venomous: No, froghoppers are not venomous. They do not possess stingers or venom glands that would harm humans or pets.
Diet: They feed on the sap of various plants. They have piercing-sucking mouthparts and extract nutrients from the vascular tissues of plants. Common hosts include grasses, legumes, and ornamental plants.
Interesting Facts:
The “spittle” or frothy substance that the nymphs (immature stage) produce is made from a foamy secretion mixed with undigested plant sap and air. This spittle provides protection from predators and helps maintain moisture.
Adult froghoppers are strong jumpers, capable of leaping many times their body length, hence the common name “froghopper.”
They are named “spittlebugs” because of the protective spittle they create in their nymphal stage.
