What would cause rafters to spread this way??

Geometicly speaking, the walls would have to get closer.

They were cut that way when built. Slopy job not using at least a 1" ridge board. I can just see them fighting now trying to keep each pair of rafters from swaying. :)
Is that exclusive to Californians ?

I think geometry applies most places, except possibly the deep south;-)
