From day one I always knew it was smarter to market to the consumer. That’s the best advice I could give anyone starting in the Home Inspection business.
I wouldn’t say smarter, as a whole, due to the HI profession currently being almost exclusively controlled by real estate agents. Newbies usually have no idea when starting out, as it’s almost always implied and acceptable that “marketing” to REA’s is the only way if they want to be “successful.”
Learning about how this thing works is usually learned through “hands-on” experience.
NEVER assume that what you experience in your local market applies to any or all other markets across the country, because they usually will not.
This.
If there was any ONE thing that worked for everyone everwhere, we would all do it, and there would never be a reason to discuss marketing.
It will NEVER happen :(
Never say Never Mike. I have already been an integral component in getting parts of Maryland to change their Radon testing regulations. Don’t think Iam done or the movement that is starting. Trust me, we have some major media networks working with us and even some secret investigative research going on as we speak into some very shady stuff that goes on in this industry.
Things can and will change. Mike I know from your posts over the years you also don’t like much of what gos on in this industry, so I would think someone intelligent like that would want to see major changes in the so called “Rules” in this profession.

I know that the link I provided is from individuals residing & working in the heavily-populated state of California (Los Angeles county to boot.) I know that what I’ve experienced on the other side of the country, in my grossly less-populated area of NW Ohio, is nearly spot-on to what their site is all about. One can deduct that this is just not a “regional” thing, but one that is rampant throughout the country.
Hmmm…
California vs Ohio
IMO… Not much difference in way of thinking.

So what you are talking about in effect is MORE government control. Honestly, I’d rather NOT involve the government. I don’t know, I’m just more of a person that thinks the government has their hands in WAY to much stuff as it is, I’m sure not going to fight to give over MORE of my life to them, even if a new regulation would benefit me, I can NOT in good conscious fight for something like that.
Hey, I completely agree with you about the govt. I can’t stand them more than most people and do not want them involved in anything I do for the most part. That being said this (to me) is one of the exceptions as right now OUR profession is being controlled by the Real Estate industry, thus In my opinion OUR profession need to be on its own and separate from any control by any other profession like the real Estate profession.
There is no need for them to be involved with what we do, and how we do it and to who. We do not need their influence whatsoever, and infect nor do our clients. Cut out the agents from being involved with the inspection process completely and you cut out the possibility of clients getting a bogus inspection from an agent as…s kissing inspector who does poor inspections and for cheap just for agent referrals, and other possible shenanigans as well.
The inspection industry and the real estate industry are 2 separate industries and need to be separate for the good of all involved.
