Romex in boiler / Furnace room

can some one clear this up as for using romex in boiler / Furnace rooms… from what I go on is t hat it is not allowed and the heat also plays a factor on the wires rating . I call it out as a defect , is this the right direction , can someone clear this up?

I know for instance that the Chicago area is crazy about
putting everything in conduit.

Here in Bmore we have “Romex” in furnace rooms all the time.
