How many layers of shingles can go on a roof in TN ? I thought it was 2 . Also do you have to pull a permit to put a new roof on ?

Hi Baron,

most juristictions only allow 2 layers of roof covering (some allow 3 with an engineers approval). I believe there are very few areas where a roof can be replaced without a permit.

I would suggest that you call your city or county building dept.

Barron,

I agree 2 should be the max.

In my area a permit is not required if the home owner is doing the work, but then that opens up another can of worms

I just talked to a code enforcement person. Since 1988 you can only put 2 layers of shingles on the roof and you only need a permit only if you fix or replace any sheathing .
