Rough opening is the framed opening for a door or window to be installed into. A access opening is not a common term but I would guess you are refering to a egress opening. A egress opening is the clear open area of a window or door that would allow escape from that window or door.

An access opening is what your couch won’t fit through. The rough opening is what you must resort to, to get the couch your wife loves into the house.

Christopher,

A rough opening is as described by Robert. An access opening would be an opening to say a crawlspace area, attic etc.

Why just this morning on my inspections I saw 4 rough access openings!!
These were rough framing inspections where the attic access is just roughed in (unfinished, no drywall).

An egress opening would be a bedroom window, escape window out of a full basement or actually an opening for a door!!

Hope that helps!!
