Kansas City Missouri school board recommends closing of up to 31 of the 60 schools in the city, including 6 of 11 high schools and over 20 elementary schools.
285 teachers to lose their jobs. Up to 31 of 60 school buildings would close under the plan. That is half of the schools in KCMO. This would save 50 million dollars, and the board is already short 8 million for this year.
Times are tough here, and in other areas of the US, more than we realize. My business, as stated elsewhere on this message board, is down over 50% from 2003, and 65% from 2004. Rough here in KC.
I personally feel sorry for all those teachers that have been promoting smaller and smaller class sizes to expand their ranks and make their job easier. :sarcasm:

If the “Cap & TAX” bill passes, within ONE year of passage the remaining/ surviving schools will need tens of thousands of dollars in “repairs” to meet the ever-changing EPA “Standards”.
Remember… this is a MANDATE… it is written into the bill!
The closed schools will need the same mandated “repairs” in order to be sold!
Where do you think that the money is going to come from for BOTH the closed schools and the open schools to be “repaired”?

If an “Energy Audit is performed and the “Energy Auditor / Contractor” finds $60,000.00 worth of so called “repairs” what is to keep him from saying… There are $120,000.00 worth of repairs needed to bring this building up to the current EPA standards?
The American public is under the assumption that having a so-called Energy Audit is going to be fair, unbiased, and impartial!

The school district has lost and thrown away millions of $$$ for the last 30 years with no improvement to the quality of education.
The school board runs the Superintendents out of town like 25 in the last 30 years or so.
Citizens flee the district to districts that do provide education.
Parents biggest complaint about the lost of schools is who is going to baby sit my kids and will my kids have to wait longer for their FREE breakfast and FREE lunches.
This plan is probably the best ever for the city

I agree that the KCMO school district has been lost due to their own greed and egos. Student enrollment is down 50% in the last few years, and board members do not realize that it is their own fault. Laid off teachers will have to get jobs elsewhere, or become home inspectors. Abandoned schools will only create lower property values, and hurt the city even more. KCMO problems are just starting. It has been more important to build 4 arenas and revitlize downtown with millions of dollars to try to keep people down there after work. A few years down the road, the downtown area will look, again, like a ghost town.
