What is the piping that it is installed on? Boiler? Domestic hot water? Domestic Cold water? - Sometimes they are installed on Domestic HW just to stop water hammer and sometime because the municipality may require an anti-backflow valve on the main water line. If it is on the boiler piping it was just that the original did not have sufficient capacity on it's own.

Also, Extrol is a brand name, similar to Romex - The tank is an expansion tank...
