 I came across a device installed on the lower base of the water heater which indicated it was a “Self Cleaning Water Heater”. The device has controls. I did not take a pic.Hmmmm. Can any help me describe what this is exactly?

Craig,

No, I don't think anyone can help you out without seeing or at least knowing what you are talking about. I did a search on self cleaning water heaters and came up with this link. Does it help you.

Craig,

Self-cleaning usually implies the configuration of a dip-tube inside the water heater. These dip tubes minimize the amount of sediment build-up inside the tank because the cold water coming out of the dip tube "swirls" at the bottom of the tank where it is then heated. "Self-cleaning" however is no miracle water heater. It will maybe add a couple of years of longevity to the unit and I still recommend the draining treatment periodically.

Joe - Thanks fior getting back to me. It seems as though after I further researched - and with your information I now have a better understanding.
