Ask the code guys.

I didn't write the HI class and its standards. I just learned them.

Interesting conversation. I agree with you, Will, about the easy and convenience factor, but in this case, my client is an investor seeking to make the minimal possible upgrades to meet the relevant code. So, while I would personally prefer a main throw in the secondary unit if I were occupying it, I have to agree that I will not recommend that one must be installed.

Thanks to everyone for the insights and valuable continuing (informal) education!

I think that brings us back to my first suggestion. Put in a main disconnect outside with disconnect breakers for each unit.

With the units being up and down the yard will probably be a common element.

OK, humor me on this for a second, Greg. If the disconnect is placed outside, does it require a lock or some type of security device? This is a pretty dicey part of the city and I know I wouldnt be too comfortable with just anyone from the alley being able to walk up and cut power to the home.

And if a lock or security device is installed, is there a risk of violating some kind of code?
