Have you run into problems finding inspectors to shadow? I wanted to do a couple before getting licensed and either companies don’t let you or they want to charge $250 per inspection?
Any recommendations?
I am located in AZ but I would imagine people in other states also run into this.
Seems like a pretty good deal to me. Only $250 for 4 hours of hands-on training and experience that will not only be a burden to the person doing it, but also constitutes a potential future loss of work due to training in competitors? I would jump all over that and consider yourself lucky they even have a program to help you. Just my 2 cents.
Morning, Manel. Hope to find you well.

I never charged a penny and had inspectors shadow me for months and months. Some every day. Others on weekends. I even paid inspectors to help me carry my tools.

It appears that Arizona requires 30 parallel inspections and 84 hours training to become licensed (https://btr.az.gov/applicants/home-inspector-applicants). I would recommend that you find a local HI school that can provide both of these. When Texas had this requirement the schools offered packages to include the inspections. As I read the AZ rules there is no requirement that these be actual homes for sale. I expect the school will find homes they can use as the schools in Texas did.
You state that you only wanted to do a couple of inspections. Are you trying to get a feel if this is a profession that would interest you before you go all in? If that is your intention I would recommend you attend the local HI association meetings. You may find someone there that can help you in that area.
If you can tell us a little more of your intentions that can help with answers.
I just put two and two together after reading this post from you. If you’re not willing to walk roofs you should consider another line of work. You will have a difficult time finding any Inspector agreeing to let you shadow them. You may find one but if they are aware of your roof walking phobia the offer will end quickly.
That seems unduly harsh and uncalled for.
And I’ve never charged a newbie to accompany me, though I understand inspectors who do. A newbie slows you down if you are really trying to educate them.
We charge $975 for five field experence inspections or $225 if paid for individually. Yes, we have made it a business.
You, as the trainee, should expect training like this to cost, and you, as the trainer, should not be expected to offer it for free! You are passing knowledge and skills to a new person that will, in turn, use those skills to make money!
I should have realized. Sorry.
