shims

What recommendation (repair or evaluate) do you make when you see excessive use of shims. I see newer homes that have an excessive use of very small shims on the support collumns and the city inspectors seem to have no problems with them.

Are there any sort of guidelines for the use of shims?

It’s not the “excessive” use of shims, but the “improper” use of “improper” shims.

The shims must be the same or better (stronger) species of wood as the joist or truss, must provide full bearing, and must be independently anchored (attached) to the joist or truss.
