Smoke deteectors

Very sad storie, A simple smoke detector WOW, This home was built in the 1800s I believe, As far as calling out smoke detectors and we are not CODE INSPECTORS, How are you guys calling this in your reports for smoke detectors that are not in compliance

How do you know anything about the presence or lack of smoke detectors in that home? There is no mention of it that I see. What I see is 3 stupid adults that went to sleep with a “bucket of embers” in the hallway. You can’t fix stupid.

My reports simply identify the location and whether or not they are interconnected. My electrical section heading recommends installation according to today’s standards for smoke detectors (which I explain). I only call out as a defect a smoke detector that does not respond or if none exists.

Joe.

Its still a breaking story that happened on x-mas day and it was not 3 stupid adults, It was 3 young children and there grand parents that died in that home. Just trying to bring a reminder to fellow inspectors.

Sad that people like this are allowed to have Kids .
This happens every day .
We can try and educate but when people do not listen this is what happens.

What a judgmental *****hole. You know nothing about these people and feel it is your moral obligation to judge who should and shouldn’t have kids.

I am vacationing up in that area right now, and all I have heard is what a wonderful family they were. It was a tragic accident, nothing more.

Thanks Troy Glad you are having a great time .

I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

Seems like Your Country has many Generations are on welfare ,
We try and educate all but many do not follow the rules , and we all continue to help them to continue to ignore the rules .
I do not call it an accident when fire place coals are left in a bucket , I call it stupidity … Roy

Yes it was. Sadly, they’ll have the rest of their lives to contemplate their stupidity.

I am with Joe and Roy. We here of people are ignoring simple warnings in every field. Like just the other day I watched a man texting as he was driving a full size transport truck driving down the busiest street in SSM On. My truck is high enough to see into the side window and I guess since no one could see him he said what the H E L L I can get away with it.
How about this one: I warned everyone in my buildings I look after to install new fuses in the breaker panel 15 Amp max, I left notes for 3 weeks on the doors. A fire started in one of the apartments and I had to go knock on all the doors to change the fuses.
Guess how many I had to change?
69 One building has 17 units and the other has 23.

What a shame that you all would even describe these poor people as stupid. Couldn’t it just be that they thought the embers were out and they weren’t. That poor woman lost her three beautiful children and her parents. Imagine yourself in that position for a second. You can’t comprehend it so you describe them as stupid instead. Really!

Harry you are right we do not know the people and it is very tragic, but ask yourself this; If you had children would you make sure you had smoke detectors in your home? If you were well off would you install a sprinkler system for back up? If you new the dangers of log ashes in a wastebasket could catch on fire would you leave it in the hallway?
This is common stuff the parents should have researched before the child was born. Children become your responsibility because they themselves cannot.
I think to call them stupid may be harsh and the better word would be foolish.

No such thing as a smoke deteector.

Smoke Alarms!

Speaking of smoke detectors! I also had to purchase about 7 packs of batteries and change 4 smoke detector units that did not work at all. One Apt had placed theirs on a book shelf in the hallway she has two children.
This is the note I put on the door 4 weeks before checking each unit.
Smoke Detectors

.*

! Detectors MUST be tested once a month for operation. This is done by pushing the test button in and listening
for an alarm sound.
IF SMOKE DETECTOR DOES NOT SOUND:
Notify the Landlord immediately. A chirping sound means the battery is low.
It is ILLEGAL to disable your smoke detector. Liability will fall on you if you do so.

Smoke Alarms!

If we are going to judge “stupid” from the front of a computer, maybe some of you should be issued signs to post on this message board…

I burn wood and re-lite my fire many times in the am when there is no heat or smoke, without a match.

People walk on hot coals because ash is such a good insulator.

Some people burn a fire twice a year and can easily think the fire is out.

More fires happen from idiots throwing Christmas wrappings into a fireplace and set an uncleaned flue ablaze!

How many of you have added charcoal lighter to the grill when it didn’t take the first time?

It was a tragic accident from the mis-belief that the fire was out.
Do we need to splash your “Stupid” comments across the internet on this highly visible web site?

Joe- Are the people that go along with your view so “Stupid” that you must post the Definition of ‘stupid’?

Here’s your sign!

Intolerance is a horrible thing isn’t it? Shame some must be so easily judgmental of others. Some of the most heinous crimes throughout history have come about from judgmental stereotypes and others intolerant behavior.

Good grief! Now I’m Hitler! This is getting ridiculous and childish. I’m *SORRY  *if I offended anyone by saying without giving it much thought the word “stupid”. Someone earlier suggested “foolish”. Fine. Choose “foolish” or any synonym for “foolish” you wish, it doesn’t matter to me. It’s just semantics. Hey, call it whatever you want. Perhaps “Ill-advised” is better, less abrasive, kinder and gentler, as in “Honey, it’s ill-advised to put that bucket of coals in the hallway. You might catch the dang house on fire!”

Synonyms for Foolish:
Absurd, asinine, brainless, cockamamy, crazy, daffy, daft, dippy, doltish, dotty, fantastic, fatuous, feebleminded, half-baked, half-witted, harebrained, ill-advised, ill-considered, imbecilic, imprudent, incautious, indiscreet, injudicious, insane, irrational, jerky, kooky, loony, ludicrous, lunatic, mad, moronic, nerdy, nutty, preposterous, ridiculous, senseless, short-sighted, silly, simple, stupid, unintelligent, unreasonable, unwise, wacky, weak, witless, zany.

I’m going to clean my fireplace now. Bye bye.

I’ll leave it at that. Folks tend to not know when to hush up, when they should on here sometimes.
