Arrest warrants

On 17 March 2023, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Putin and Lvova-Belova, alleging criminal responsibility for the unlawful deportation and transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia.[33][34][35][36] It decided that they are covered by articles 8(2)(a)(vii) and article 8(2)(b)(viii) of the Rome Statute and intended by Russia as permanent.[36] The charges carry a potential life sentence.[34] It is the first time the court has issued an arrest warrant against the leader of a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.[33] ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan said, “We must ensure that those responsible for alleged crimes are held accountable and that children are returned to their families and communities. We cannot allow children to be treated as if they are the spoils of war.”[34]
