"South Africa: Soils, Substructure, and Superstructure" course

The picture was taken from the gallery and it is called Stucco Over Brick. It was uploaded in December 31, 1969. It has an extreme crack at the corner. There was normal movement (subsidence) which created graduated subsidence most extreme at the corner. The stress is so great and it can break the slab. The stress is not vertical or horizontal but diagonal. This type of cracking is more common in both exterior and interior walls, and it is around door and window openings toward the corners and end walls than in middle sections of wall.

The Component name is Wall,
the paint on the wall appears to be smooth without cracks. Based on the appearance of the of the paint we can conclude that their are no cracks to the plaster and the wall therefore no course for concern

Things to look for when inspecting retaining walls

  1. Wall not upright and leaning away
  2. Wall bowing and cracks
  3. Cracking and brick displacement

Things to look for when inspecting steps

  1. steps settling away from the landing
  2. landing and steps settling away

This crack shown in the image shows a crack from floor to wall but only looks at most to be a plaster crack. This is not a serious structural fault and can easily be repaired with scrapping of paint and replaster and repaint.

Concrete Tiles: Concrete tiles are very popular in most countries. They are durable and can give a very pleasing or enchanting view or appearance of a home. Many styles and colours are available. Their properties of strength, durability and style are a major plus point for builders and buyers of property.

Soil

Soil is a naturally-occurring mixture of mineral and organic ingredients with a definite form, structure, and composition.
Its composed primarily of minerals which are produced from parent material which is broken into small pieces by weathering.

Mineral particles give soil texture.

Water and air occupy the pore spacesthe area between soil particles. The final ingredient of a soil is organic matter.

Inspection & Writing Assignment:

This gutter has a good extension and slope away from the foundation to drain away the rain water. Water flows into a concrete channel which assists with water being further directed away from the wall. However there are rocks on the concrete channel and debris can accumulate under the rocks thereby blocking the flow of water creating a pool and making the excess water reverse back towards the foundation.

Research & Writing Assignment:

Garage fire Containment. Garages should be adequately sealed from living spaces and restrict fire long enough to allow people to escape from the home. Both attached and detached garages are at risk if there are flammable liquids stored, heaters or boilers( they can spark) and building or workshop projects conducted in the garage e.g. welding.
Doors are not allowed directly into sleeping areas. Solid wood doors and core steel doors must be at least 35 mm thick or 20 min fire rated.

Inspection & Writing Assignment:

The minimum depth of the strip foundation trench must be at least 400mm below the original ground level. The average minimum thickness of the foundation must be at least 200mm. The strength of the concrete used for un-reinforced strip footing must be at least 15MPa or better.

Research & Writing Assignment:

Around the edge of the slab, the concrete forms a beam that is perhaps 2 feet deep. The rest of the slab is 4 or 6 inches thick. A 4- or 6-inch layer of gravel lies beneath the slab. A 4-millimeter sheet of plastic lies between the concrete and the gravel to keep moisture out.

Inspection & Writing Assignment:

Section: ENTRANCE PATIO Component: Guard wall

The front entrance brick guard wall has a structural crack. The crack has been caused by pressure from the tree growing directly against the wall. Rain water is penetrating the wall through the header course and in due course further damage will occur

Research & Writing Assignment:

Picture: CONCRETE SLAB CURL

Concrete slab curl can occur when the slab surface is warmer and wetter than the base during curing. This would cause the slab to displace upward in the centre. The opposite occurs when the slab surface is cooler and drier than the base. This condition is not a material defect provided the slab is not load bearing
