I’m looking at this cheap kit guardrail again and frankly I don’t think it will withstand 200 lbs.

I do a lot of older homes in the city and one notable trait of original stairs is a Newel post that is one massive piece of wood and extends beside the stringer down through the ceiling and is visible from the floor below.

Railing is missing.

That un-guard railed area to the right of the staircase is an accident waiting to happen, unless that was the idea the home owner asked the builder to avoid protecting when the home was built seeing he and his companion hit a unresolvable rough patch :wink:

Randy, why was that lock put on the outside of the door? Could it be to keep someone in that room?

Good catch Randy. Although I seldom see this safety deficiency it deserves to be written up hard.

Probably a fair chance it goes to the garage or to the outdoors, would be my guess.
