I don’t think it’s their immigration policies. Our policies are even laxer. It’s their misguided effort to thwart assimilation. Second- and third-generation immigrants think of themselves as Arabs or Muslims, not Frenchmen.
Here first-generation immigrants think of themselves as Americans. I know. I’m one of them.

Me and my family (especially my 8-year-old daugter Jessi) will mourn his loss.
Did he do some very risky (and foolish) things? Sure. But that was part of who he was, and - more importantly - the way he chose to share his knowledge and his passion with his audience. We spent many hours not only enjoying his television programs, but learning a lot about wildlife from them.
A modern day Marlin Perkins who died doing what he loved. We should all be so lucky.
Thanks for the memories, Steve… and rest in peace.
I never saw his program and was only aware of his pop-cultural status from the few times that I saw him on other programs. He certainly had an undeniable natural charisma and an overarching enthusiasm for his life’s chosen work.
I always feel personally offended when someone with so much to give and to live for is cut down in the prime of life.
