Student Discussion: How to Inspect HVAC Systems Course

I just started this section as well. In the combustion fundamentals section, the inspector added a pic where he was pointing at an issue that indicated condensation in the flue pipe of a natural draft furnace, but the image was posed in a way that didn’t show what the inspector was pointing at. Luckily, later in the section, it was described as a white, powdery substance that was not visible in the image.

Just started the HVAC module definetly looking forward to obtaining the knowledge as this is by far my weakest link.

Hi Everyone, I have a few questions about the HVAC system that I inspected during the course. It was my first time observing an electrically powered air to air heat pump system (my entire life consisted of living in homes with gas fueled force air systems). I have a few photos attached and corresponding questions in this order:

  1. there is a ‘breaker switch’ directly on the indoor air handler plus a ‘breaker switch’ in a box above the unit. Which of these is the main shut off switch and can someone explain how to switch off the one in second pic (I’ve not seen a switch like this before)
  2. is this small box on the crawl space floor a pump to move condensate? I don’t know what that is
  3. unrelated to any photos - the course had much info about gas fueled forced air inspection tips, etc. What do you typically look for when inspecting an electrically powered heat pump, especially the interior unit?

Jumping into the course now and looking forward to it.

The small box that you are referring to looks to be the condensate pump that does remove condensation from the evaporator coil of the air handler to the outside of the home.

Starting the HVAC course today. This is the halfway mark for me for the required courses.

I’m looking forward to being able to inspect my own HVAC system after I finish the course!

Started this one awhile back, then decided I should take some other courses first. Back for round 2!!

Starting the HVAC course now. 1 more to go!

I concur , got a 88 first time around, then a 92 second time, definitely not my strong suit either, will probably take the HVAC course again to drive it home, good luck.

The heat exchanger inspection video is outstanding. I learned a lot from that video.

Seeing a heat exchanger inside, and even just seeing the inside of the furnace was a great illustration to show its functionality.

This was another heady course. I enjoyed it and learned a lot about my own unit, a heat pump. I am also intrigued with the geothermal heat pump. My uncle used to talk about it’s money savings

About to start the course.

Im starting the HVAC course today. Good luck to you too.

Did he also talk about the cost to install the system? If I knew I would live in the house for a long while it would make sense.

It was fun! I actually realized I had some carbon dust buildup on one of my heaters and had it cleaned because of it!

on to hvac. last one was tough but passed. having fun
