Student Discussion: How To Perform Deck Inspections Course

I had two family members get new decks built on their homes in the last couple years before I started these courses. One deck was about 9k from a company and was constructed, in my opinion, terribly in many ways. The other was about 3k and isn`t that much better. I know this is nothing compared to some decks and homes out there, but it is definitely sad that people are constantly getting stuck with such poor craftmanship. I was a victim of such practices myself, now I am here learning to be an inspector.

Looking forward to this one! A lot of people I know have built their own decks. Probably not well.

I had helped build a deck a few years back for my grandparents. Knowing what I did on the deck made me pay more attention to the things I did when I was inspecting it. This was a great course!

Exited to get started.

I’m very excited to learn more about decking because I always have problems with inspecting decks.

Jumping into the deck inspection course. Looking forward to it as it is an area
I am very familiar with.

I learned a lot here. I did have to keep thinking about the difference between joists and beams, but maybe it was just me.

Way too common of an offense…

getting started

I had worked on a few myself but this course definitely taught me some things.

Just passed moisture intrusion course and moving forward to deck inspections course. I have built many decks as a contractor yet interested in more information.

I’m very exited to be working on this deck inspections course. I am only a few more modules away from completing my certification and am looking forward to getting to work inspecting homes.

I find it interesting that there is no correlation between a deck permit and deck failure.

I too am close to completing my certification. I will be taking the 4 hour exam tomorrow morning. The deck course has definitely opened my eyes. Most all desks I’ve seen on my Ride-Along inspections were not installed correctly, especially the ledger. Many had no vertical support under the ledger.

I’m interested in everything we are looking for in deck inspections.

OK I just saw Big Ben use his iPhone to measure parts of the deck using the iPhone app I didn’t know I had. I HAVE A NEW FREE TOOL! Thanks for the freebee, Ben!

I am really enjoying this as opposed to buying a 32 CEU package from a company.

This course is very informative cant wait to get going on the deck course

Starting the deck inspection course today. I’ve been looking forward to this one.

Bristol, TN here and I am working my way through the pre-licensing portion of the course for Tennessee. Each section has caused me to take a magnifying look at my own home. Parts of which I have found to be wonderful. I am dreading this deck portion. I built our deck approximately 15 years ago with really zero knowledge and I am already seeing all of the things I did incorrectly. The good news is that it is a very strong and well used deck. The bad news is that I now know my own defects that I will need to correct. Enjoying the courses though! Thank you.
