What method is used to determine the minimum spacing requirements for convenience receptacles? What wall spaces are to be considered? How are floor receptacles regulated?
Receptacles shall be installed so that no point measured horizontally along the floor line of any wall space is more than 6 feet from a receptacle outlet.
Receptacle outlets in floors shall not be counted as part of the required number of receptacle outlets expect where located within 18 inches of the wall.

When is a permit required - FOr any structural work, for HVAC, Plumbing, electrical, decks over 200 feet and any roof structues.

  • How much bearing is required for the ends of floor joists supported by wood or metal? Supported by concrete or masonry? What other methods are acceptable?

Floor joists that are supported by wood or metal are required to have at least 1 1/2 inches of bearing. Joists that are supported by masonry or concrete are required to have at least 3 inches of bearing. Ends of joists may be supported by 1" by 4" ribbon strip nailed to the adjacent stud. Masonry connections may be direct or by a minimum 2" nominal thickness sill plate.

  • Which sources of outside or return air are prohibited?
    Return air shall not be taken from a closet, toilet room, kitchen, garage, or unconditioned attic. It can come from a kitchen as long as the return air openings only serve the kitchen and any cooking appliances are at least 10 ft away.

Chapter 2 Dead loads are the load produced by the building materials used in construction for the building. A live loads are items brought in to occupy the building ie. furniture and accessories. Environmental items such as snow or flood however, are not considered live loads.

How must safety glazing (tempered glass) be Identified. It has to have an indicting etching where the window must be destroyed to be removed. There are two exceptions I will probably never see. The etching should provide manufacturer, type of temper and glazing standard complied with.

Smoke detection alarms shall be installed inside each sleeping room and in vicinity outside of the bedrooms. They shall be powered from the building electrical system and should any construction or updates occur to older structures current codes for smoke detectors will be in force.

When is a permit required? What types of work are exempted from permits?

All construction related work requires a permit except those specifically listed such as minor repairs, maintenance, finish work and limited equipment replacement. Even when a permit is not required all work shall be done in accordance to IRC code requirements.

Discussion 5 question. Sill plate must be connected to the foundation with bolts measuring 1/2 in diameter and penetrating 6 inches into the foundation. Bolts must be spaced no further than 6 feet apart and should be within 12 inches and no closer than 3.5 inches of each joint. the latter presents a problem in that the bolts may have to be added after pouring.

What is the definition of light-framed construction?

Light-framed construction uses primarily wood or light-gauged steel in a repetitive system for vertical and horizontal elements.

  • Where must a bored hole in a stud be located? What is the maximum permitted size of a bored hole located in a bearing wall? In a nonbearing wall?

A bored hole shall not be less than 5/8th of an inch from the edge of the stud. The bored hole shall not be located in the same section as a cut or notch. The maximum size of a bored hole in a stud located in a bearing wall is 40 percent of the actual stud depth. In nonbearing wall the maximum size of a bored hole in a stud is 60 percent of the actual stud depth.

  • How are rafters to be tied together? At what maximum intervals must collar ties be located?

Rafters shall be connected with a collar tie or ridge strap in accordance with R802.4.6, or with a gusset plate in accordance with table R602.3(1). Collar ties shall be spaced not more than 4 ft on center.

Decks attached to walls may not be toenailed or nailed in a way where fasteners can withdraw. Decks should be positively anchored to the primary structure.

  • At what minimum height is a masonry chimney required to terminate?

Chimneys shall extend not less than 2 feet higher than any portion of a building within 10 ft, but shall be not less than 3 ft above the highest point where the chimney passes through the roof.

  • How high above a floor in a garage is an appliance with an ignition source required to be located?

Appliances with an ignition source are required to be installed not less than 18 inches above the floor in garages.

  • What is the minimum vertical clearance required between the cook-top of a range and any unprotected combustible material? Under what conditions may the clearance be reduced?

Freestanding or built-in ranges shall have a vertical clearance above the cooking top of not less than 30 inches. Reduced clearances are permitted in accordance with the listing and labeling of the range hoods or ovens with integral exhaust.

How are stud spacings determined? The standard and minimum is 16OC. Variations depend on the weight being transferred through to the foundation and whether there are additional stories being supported. TableR602.3(5) (6) are the references.
Double top plates are most common needed to be overlapped at the corners. joints are not required to be over studs.
Single top plates will follow table 602.3.(2) requirements.

Purlins are used to reduce the span of rafters. They need to have the same dimensional sizes as the rafters they support. They should not be on less than a 45 degree angle spaced no more than 4 feet apart and not exceed a length of 8 feet. These are commonly used in our area of Texas.

Masonry Chimney termination should occur no less than three feet from the roof it penetrates and no less than two feet from the highest point of the roof within ten feet.
