This outlet was tested and is a hot/neutral reverse. This is an electrical Safety issue. Recommend correction by qualified electrician.
I read the article on Tyvek. Tyvek is a material that was developed by the dupont company. It is a strong durable material that is water resistant. I wear tyvek suits while inspecting crawlspaces. This saves my clothing from getting dirty.
**InterNACHI How to Inspect Fireplaces, Stove and Chimneys Short Essay **
Pictured is a gas fireplace that I recently inspected. This fireplace had a gas log and several defects were observed. The defect pictured is perhaps the most significant one, and shows that the flue is currently misaligned with the throat of the chimney. This condition will allow combustion gasses to bypass the flue and escape into the chimney. This defect was recorded in my report, and also verbally communicated to the homeowner at the time of the inspection. I stated that the fireplace is not to be used until this condition, as well as the other defects observed, are corrected.

Ventless Fireplace Inspection
Ventless fireplaces differ from typical fireplaces in that there is no flue system to exhaust combustion products to the outside atmosphere for a ventless system. Also, ventless fireplaces use the air within the room to enable the combustion of the fuel (typically natural gas). This design is problematic, because the fireplace will consume the ambient oxygen in the room during operation. For this reason, most manufacturers direct the consumer to open a window while the fireplace is in operation. While this will certainly improve the safety of the device, opening a window during operation will defeat a potential key purpose of warming the room with the fireplace, and this instruction is likely to be ignored by the consumer. Many states have outlawed ventless fireplace systems due to this design characteristic.
This is a gas operated fireplace. It is very neat. Did not find anything wrong with it. It works with or without electricity.
After this course I get knowledge about any new and different types of fireplaces. Now I get a good knowledge about fire place. I can find defects in fireplaces more easly.
The article I read was Drones and Inspections. I am not surprised that the fAA has not allowed drones to be used for commercial business yet. They are always behind the times. Great article of the future to come for home inspections and the real estate market. I believe that utilizing a drone will have some great benefits to offer the home buyer.
This chimney functions fine, but has some defects. The crown has many cracks and some pieces of it have fallen off. The cap and spark arrestors are in good shape. You can also see that the chimney is in need of repointing, and there is moss and lichen growing in the joints. The flashing and counter flashing are done correctly, they have been bent and inserted into mortar joints and grooves cut on the sides.IMG_7324.JPG
Fireplace Fuel:
Fireplaces and wood stoves are designed to burn only one type of fuel. Used as all purpose incinerators, these devices can pose hazards. Harmful vapors can vent into the living spaces, harmful vapors will also vent to the outdoors, contaminating household and environmental air. Burning inappropriate fuel can cause mechanical damage as well. Chimneys can become lined with residue, which may lead to a hazardous chimney fire. Appropriate fuels include dried and cut firewood, untreated pallets, fallen tree limbs, untreated and unpainted lumber and fire logs. Burn only approved and appropriate fuel in your fireplace or wood stove. Certain items should never be burned because they can cause problems ranging from minor irritation to a hazardous health threat to your family.
Here’s a picture of a fireplace that is a little dirty but otherwise in great shape. The damper worked fine as well.
The fireplace I will be inspecting today is a pre-fab manufactured unit. The unit is in relatively good shape. The inside walls have no obvious cracks or gaps noted. None of the inside walls have missing materials. The fireplace is a wood burning fireplace. The fireplace has the proper clearance between the fireplace and any surrounding combustible materials.
The article I will be reviewing is “15 Tools Every Homeowner Should Own.” The article is about certain tools that the average homeowner should own and why they should have these tools. Some of the tools include a plunger, level, hammer and multiple others. I think this would be a good read for new home owners.
Chimney Clean-out and Venting
After inspection, the clean-out had minimal debris and was in very good condition. A cap was installed where the old furnace vent was located above the hot water venting. The hot water venting is at a proper angle. A more detailed inspection on the roof was not accessible at this time.
Inspecting Kitchen Fan Exhaust
This article explains what to look for when inspecting kitchen exhaust fans. Kitchen exhaust fans are normally installed in the range hood directly over the stove. The exhaust should be vented directly outside with proper joint sealant and not to be recirculated within the home.
Components shared by most types of fireplaces include the interior, exterior and a fire burning area. Individual fireplaces may have a foundation, flue, firebox, mantel, hearth, and damper, smoke shelf, lintel, cap, wash, gas log and/or gas log lighter. Accessible fireplace components are visually inspected for signs of significant malfunction, excessive or unusual wear and general state of repair. However, portions of a standard fireplace configuration are always, by their nature and location, inaccessible for a home inspection.
The fireplace in the living room was intended to be gas fired only. It was fully functional at the time of the inspection, however no attempt should be made to burn wood in this fireplace, and it cannot be converted in the future to burn wood or any other solid fuel.
The attached photo shows a chimney in which a vent pipe was removed and the hole was never filled. Upon further inspection it is determined no other appliances are connected to this chimney. It is recommended that the opening be closed with mortar or similar building material to stop the flow of conditioned air to the outside
I learned about the different ratings of fire extinguishers. I was not aware that no fire extinguisher can safely or effectively be used for all types of fire. Very useful information.
ADJUSTABLE STEEL COLUMNS
Adjustable steel columns are a common sight in many basements they can multipart called telescopic steel columns or single piece design. Due to the structural nature of these posts proper inspection is very important. An inspector should verify attachment of post to floor and to the beam, and the screw adjustment is not out more than 3’’. Care should be taken that the post is not bent, cracked or excessively corroded, visible cracks in interior walls may be a sign of problems with the columns
Wood stoves
The picture shows a wood burning stove that sits in a fireplace. Its a heating appliance made from iron or steel that is capable of burning wood fuel. This particular setup is unique because the stove sits in a fireplace style opening. Wood burning stoves come in many sizes based on room size and different purposes.
