Just because one has never seen it done, doesn’t mean it wasn’t used. I was taught by a master stone mason. He used it all his life, because the modern plasticisers weren’t available.

Well, most corners don’t fit into the 3,4,5 rule. You’re close though. So how do you get the corners square to each other?

No, I’m not asking how you get a corner level. I’m asking how you get the corners level to each other. They might be 60’ apart.

Anyway, most block layers don’t use two tools. If they did, every job would be level and square. What are they?

I actually use one more tool (two tools taped together) that really makes for a perfect block job when you start filling in between the corners… but for now I’m asking how you get the corners PERFECTLY square and level to each other. There are two tools you need to use if you want them square and level to each other. What are they?

Remember, the footings (we call them footers back east) aren’t square or level, so it’s up to the block layer to start off square and recover level after a few courses. What two tools does he need to set the corners PERFECTLY square to each other and then get them level to each other after a few courses?

Strings only make straight lines, sort of, if the wind isn’t blowing. A string can be at an angle (not level) and you can make a parallelogram out of only perfectly straight lines (a parallelogram isn’t square)… so strings won’t help make corners square and level to each other. You need two tools for that, rarely used on a block job. Robert almost got one of them. He’s real close. What’s the other?

We’re talking PERFECT now. If you’re OK with one end of your house being 1" lower than the other (most are) then you don’t need perfection. If you’re OK with your band joist hanging over the edge of the block a little on one end of a wall and not the other (remember: 4’X8’ sheets of sub-flooring come square) then you don’t need perfection.

And a liquid level is more accurate than a laser level because if a laser level is off by a hair at the level, the laser is off by an inch 60’ away. Water is level across miles.

Furthermore, a laser level needs something that a water level doesn’t. It needs a line of sight. You can’t shoot a laser through a pallet of block that was delivered in your line of sight. A liquid level goes up and down and around objects.

I don’t know what you’d use nowadays as I have built a brick, block or stone wall in 12 years, but in my day we used a plumb-bob, spirit level, masons square and a string line. The homes in Europe have been built that way for centuries and they have stood for centuries with almost no problems.

And they used this tool for centuries as well to make the corners of a masonry building square with each other. Not level, not plumb, not even level with each other… but square with each other. What is it?

And some building foundations are quite complex. They aren’t simple squares or rectangles. There are many different corners, inside and outside corners, and buildings that have very irregular footprints. What tool keeps all those corners square with each other?

Remember, a string is only for keeping something straight. A level is only for keeping something perfectly horizontal. A plumb bob is only for keeping something perfectly vertical. Square is a different animal, especially when your structure has something other than a simple rectangular footprint.

One my own I used a tape and chalk line. One with color one without.
Did not do many!
Point for referencing. Perpendicular lines.
Inside corners are the same length.
Measuring tape.
Tell tale pole advancing courses.

Never used a brick tape.

I mentioned footings, recovering course level.
Been as much as 4" off for 20’ with brick.
Block you do not have much course recovery.

What two tools does he need to set the corners PERFECTLY square.
