To any HVAC guys by trade...

How hard would it be to change a furnce and central air system on my own. I am very mechanically inclined and have done boilers and hot water heaters. I just bought a house that has a 25 years old furnce and an old a/c unit. I got a quote from a local company and they want $10,000. Any info would be great.

Thanks

Well first things first you have to learn to spell the word furnace correctly:)

Changing a furnace is not rocket science but the A/C unit is impossible with out the correct tools and or equipment.

Most distributors will not sell equipment to you unless you are a state registered or licensed contractor and have a valid C.F.C license. Once you have that you need will need to pull a permit in most states.

Then you need a load calculation done on the house to determine what size unit to install in the house.

Needless to say not an easy undertaking for the do-it-yourselfer.
