Addition of Filtration Media Improved IAQ in Fla. Case Study
ANAHEIM, CA ? A paper delivered at the Winter Meeting of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE) reported improved indoor air quality at a private club in south Florida both with and without the presence of cigarette smoking.
The study tested the use of positive pressure, air separation, ventilation, filtration, and cleaning through ozone technology. The study was run in three phases. In the first test, the club?s conventional HVAC system was used. In phase two, measurements were taking after the installation of a dessicant energy recovery (ER) wheel. Finally, a third round of testing occurred after the addition of filtration media. In each phase of the test, pollutant levels fell. In addition, the installation of the energy recovery equipment also served to reduce costs. Using the wheel resulted in the need for less ductwork, and smaller HVAC units. The club, which would have had to invest an estimated $35,000-$43,000 on HVAC equipment without the ER wheel, spent approximately $23,000-$25,000 instead ? and should realize some $4000 in energy savings per year as well. The club owners were reported to be pleased with the project?s results.

Experts Foresee Mold Problems Getting Worse over Next Three Years
More than eight out of 10 U.S. experts on the front lines fighting the battle against mold and poor indoor air quality believe mold problems have increased over the last three years, and more than two-thirds expect that those problems will get worse over the next three years, according to a new Icynene Inc.-commissioned survey.
The industry survey was conducted last November on behalf of Icynene with accredited indoor air quality professionals across the U.S. with the following areas of expertise: IAQ investigation, remediation contracting, HVAC installation/service/hygiene, engineering and design, duct cleaning, insurance, specifying, risk management, architecture, facilities management, equipment supply, laboratory analysis, cleaning/maintenance, and education.

Pennsylvania Receives Funds to Explore Increasing Rate of Asthma
The Pennsylvania Department of Health (PDH) Jan. 12 announced that it has received a grant for $594,000 over three years from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to address the rising incidence of asthma.
?These funds will allow the department and our partners, such as the American Lung Association and the American Respiratory Alliance of Western Pennsylvania, to gather and interpret already available asthma data in order to identify the extent of the disease in Pennsylvania,? Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Calvin Johnson said. ?Once we have that information, we can construct a comprehensive statewide plan to tackle the problem.? According to the CDC, the total number of new cases of children and adults with asthma has more than doubled from 1985 to 1997.

Honeywell Introduces FC40R Return Grille Filter
Honeywell has introduced a heating/cooling system air filter that it believes ?gives homeowners all the benefits of a four-inch professional-grade filter specifically designed to fit into a standard residential one-inch return grille.?
Honeywell?s FC40R Return Grille Filter is 20 times more effective than common one-inch fiberglass filters at capturing airborne particles as small as 0.3 micron, the size of typical household particles like pet dander and dust, according to the company.
While standard one-inch disposable air filters are only 17% efficient in removing indoor air pollutants 10 microns in size, the FC40R?s sister product ? the F100 - is 83% efficient at capturing particles of this size, including pet dander, pollen, and dust from the air, moving through the filter, the company said.

EMLab Joins Forces with TestAmerica Environmental Services
Environmental Microbiology Laboratory Inc. (EMLab), a mold and bacterial testing laboratory, Jan. 14 announced that it has joined forces with TestAmerica Environmental Services LLC.
This change is designed to allow EMLab to provide a broader range of services and more locations to better serve the changing needs of its clients. Asheville, NC-based TestAmerica is the second-largest environmental laboratory in the United States.
EMLab specializes in mold, bacterial, and bioaerosol analysis. EMLab?s database and reference library are considered among the largest and most complete in the industry. TestAmerica specializes in tests to detect trace level organic and inorganic contaminants in soil, water, sludge, and air samples that are shipped from industrial processing and other sites that are being investigated, monitored, or remediated for the presence of harmful substances. TestAmerica also performs drilling and air emissions testing.

Georgia-Pacific has announced that two of its interior gypsum panel products have passed Good Housekeeping Institute (GHI) tests for repelling moisture.
