Un-insulated bath enclosure as viewed from attic. The un-insulated wall is the master bedroom and the other is the hallway. In fifteen years I have never seen this before!
interior walls are rarely insulated…
That is correct. So someone forgot to cover the shower enclosure and insulate it from the attic?
Yes, that huge bypass/cavity needs to be sealed air-tight and then insulated. Air tightness is more important than 20 inches of loose insulation atop of swiss cheese where it becomes an air filter and not so much an insulation.
Insulation guy wins the “not my job” award for today, lol. And it’s not their job, but wouldn’t you say something to somebody? Who knows, maybe they did.
Thanks, That is what I am reporting. Just when you think you have seen it all, then there is the next inspection!!!
Man, the heat loss, from a hot shower, into the attic must be massive. How’s the snow melt in Chicagoland area?
Should this also be called out as lack of a fire stop?
I would narrate that into my report…for sure.
Thanks, have a good evening!
Welcome…you too.
Good find.
And it probably took two separate contractors to make that mistake.
First the framer, then the insulators who pretended as if the hole did not exist.

Have seen this many times…But usually pick up on it with Thermal imaging…not a bad idea to scan the interior walls for this reason. find this also common with Fireplace chases at corner installations.
