From what little I see of the entire system it looks like a heat recovery system that is integrated with a heat pump system. I see them occasionally, most of them have been disconnected because the owners did not see any significant difference in their water heating bill. Our contract has a disclaimer in it about heat recovery systems. We do not inspect those. I usually note it on the report as such and move on.

Thanks, so what you are saying is the A/C compressor heats water on top of the HW heater? So the additional lines that I see are water for the house? icon_question.gif Thanks

It is a heat recovery unit. Used quite frequently here in south Florida on heat pumps. Small circulator pump starts when A/C unit is energized, hot water from hot water heater is recirculated thru small heat exchanger which is heated from hot gas off of compressor discharge. Slightly lowers compressor head pressure for small energy savings and helps maintain hot water temp which results in additional energy savings.

Downside is susceptible to leaks over time.

Look at the hot water heater and you will see the additional supply and return lines
