As most of you have probably read in previous threads, a local TV news team recently aired an undercover ‘sting’ investigation of Home Inspectors, during which it was revealed that a State Representative was drafting legislation that would require Michigan inspectors to be licensed. I was able to track down an e-mail address for the Representative, so I wrote him asking for more details regarding the proposed legislation. Here’s his reply:
Mr. Mooney:
Thank you for your recent e-mail concerning House Bill 5587, which
would regulate and licence Home Inspectors.
The reason I have introduced this legislation is because of some of the
issue that you brought up in your e-mail. I had several constituents
contact me with their concerns over practices of some Home Inspectors,
while looking into their concerns I found that there is no real
supervision by the State of Michigan in this industry. My intention is
not to implement standards that help one part of the industry more then
another. MY hope is that we can work with people like yourself to
standardize training and therefore service so that the consumer can
have
piece of mind that they are getting the best most professional service
that they can.
I would be happy to meet with you and your organization at any time to
discuss this legislation. Also I welcome your input as an insider in
the industry.
Please contact my office any time with any other questions or concerns
that you may have.
Frank Accavitti, jr.
State Representative
42nd House District

Thanks, Chuck; I’ll keep that in mind. BTW, if you’re interested in reading the actual House Bill, I tracked it down & put a link to it on the State Legislation board.

It would probably be good to explain to the Rep and that TV show that a lot of what Newcomer did (like a TIFF 8800 gas check) was out and beyond any National Associations “Standards” or those of any Licensed State that I’ve ever heard of.
Which means that if there was HI licensing in Michigan, nothing much would have changed or been effected by the TV show.
By the way one of my friends up there by Detroit talked to 1 of the HI's on that show and saw the guys report. The Detroit Inspector was a guy named Gossman?? He checked the furnace with 2 CO monitors, a mirror, and by watching the flames. Saw no damage but in person and in his report told buyer the furnace was past its lifespan, had heavy rusting and recommended a Service Man do further checking prior to closing. I'm told that this Gossman?? is a syndicated writer on HI and home repair stuff.
I think the TV person forgot to mention any of that - Makes you wonder how much else of her story was total BS!!

I’m on a plane whenever he wants to meet.
Nick
PS. If you are ever a victim of a sting operation, call me quick and I'll get you out of it before it hits the press. Also, always do your home inspections as if you are on camera... you just might be.

Dan, that would be Lon Grossman of Technihouse Inspections in West Bloomfield. I've never met him, but I've heard his name for years. I've read in several places that he started the first HI company in the Detroit metro area years ago. Along with his newspaper columns, I've also heard him doing home maintenance hints on the radio, possibly even TV. I can't say I've heard of the others in the report, but Lon's definitely not the inept inspector that the reporter would have you believe.

Paul as far as I can tell there is about 50 NACHI members in Michigan. I saw this posted somewhere. Not really sure if it’s the most current count or not. The state Rep you have talked to, did he give any time line on the bill. Also I read the link you posted, I did not see any requirements for the license. This must be yet to be determined.

Paul - Yes, I’ve heard his name thrown out several times over the past 10 years in various seminars I’ve attended around the country, and never in the realm of inept. I think “Mr. Picky” would be more accurat.
