Saw the opening in the bottom of the shower, followed it and found it was the waste water from the clothes washer, depositing on the shower floor.
If you saw this in an inspection what would you write up?

Washing machine drain line was improperly terminated into the shower stall.
Although the tile work they did around that drain line is a nice touch. ![]()
Yes write it up. A shower pan is not an approved location for disposal.
It has become a non compliant drain receptor.
P2706.3 prohibits using most general plumbing fixtures, such as sinks and bathtubs, as receptors for indirect waste piping to prevent contamination.
There are exceptions: Kitchen sink trap accepting a dishwasher’s discharge and a laundry tray receiving a clothes washers’ discharge.
IRC P2706.2 Prohibited waste receptors. Plumbing fixtures that are used for washing or bathing shall not be used to receive the discharge of indirect waste piping.
But I’ve seen worse.
Rubbermaid trash can with a sump pump in it to push the washing machine waste up to the sewer line.
And yes it smelled as bad as you are imagining.
So sorry.
I would report what I saw.
Observation: The show stall pan was improperly plumbed to accept the washing machines dirty clothes and rinse cycle drain water on the sidewall close to the shower pan floor drain. In essence, the shower stall became a non compliant drain receptor.
Recommendation: A licensed plumbing contractor further evaluate, and improve, the washer drain pipes, standpipe and missing trap, so the drain pipes are properly installed and appropriately plumbing to a DWV Drain Waste Vent. Act within any recommendations therein.
Hope that helps, Ethan.
What is a shower stahl?
You spend a lot longer in a stahl than a stall. I have a stahl. I added a second water heater so I wouldn’t run out of hot water.![]()
