Water heater clearance

Out here we like to park our $100,000 cars on the street and fill our 3-car garages with boxes and boxes of junk–ooops, sorry, one man’s junk is another man’s priceless possessions–goodies. Consequently, on about 25% of my inspections I have no way to get anywhere near the water heater. But I do take good pictures. Notwithstanding the fact that I don’t like flammable materials stored near my gas-fired water heater, is there anything in the any of the codes about any sort of clearance requirement like there is for electric panels?

Home inspections. . . .

(briefly states) 30 inches (762mm)of working space hall be provided in front of the control side to service an appliance.

Funnily enough though it is not covered under the specific water heater codes (I guess one size fits all)

Hope this helps
