What are these?

I inspected this home Friday and came accross these in the walk in attic. The home was built in 1876. There were shafts at each gable end of the attic and went all the way to the basement, but I could not find where they began.

They look like venilation shafts to me to possibly keep the air moving in the home which was a true brick home.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, todd

Homes of that era had plenty of natural ventilation. They didn’t need any additional help. In addition, building science was not as it is today.

From the photo’s, they look like unlined chimney’s that have had the portion above the roof line removed.
