What is this on garage ceiling by water heater

I think one of the main reasons that you were not suppose to use galv. pipe on gas years ago was because the water lines were galvanized and if you used galvanized on the gas pipe they would look the same and they didn’t want people cutting into a gas line thinking it was water…I also heard about the flaking off of the galvanized but I’ve never ever heard of anyone having a problem with it

Not only does the pipe need to be black now but it also needs to be identified.
Outside usually in yellow inside either bands of yellow or gas stickers.
I agree Roy.

Yellow or identified by stickers as been required in commercial as long as i can remember in Ontario

But you are just young punk!

Never seen it done on a home always seen it done in Industry.

CSA B149 6.17
Identification of piping or tubing.
(a) Painted Yellow
(b) Yellow banding, Labels or markings
© not exceed more than 20 feet without markings.
I do not like the last one and feel that 20 feet is too long.

CA allows galv piping for gas distribution.
