How old was the house?
Was the water supply a cistern, well, or municipal?
I’ve never seen that type of contraption before and wonder if it could be some type of old school heater to prevent the line from freezing.
Original house was built in the early 70s with an addition in the 90’s. This is on rural lake development where I assume the house was originally on a well and probably shared with a few others. This house was at the end of a cul-de-sac.
The “canister was around 8” in diameter and couldn’t have been more than 4’ long. I could not fit to get a closer look.

It’s just a guess, but it looks like an old in-line water de-scaler. Snake oil!
