I would imagine you do not see them much down in Florida. Up here in CT I do a lot of historic homes. Did one built in 1787 awhile back. It was an interesting combo of building materials. Probably had a representation of every type/dimension of lumber imaginable from whole unpeeled logs and hand hewn beams to modern 2x6's. That was an interesting one.
By the way, this stuff is seaweed batt insulation.

First time I've seen it in batts. Usually its just stuffed loosely into wall cavities. Since the home was built in the 1940's, maybe it had something to do with a shortage of material for the war effort. They used Kapoc for insulation back then too and that is the same stuff the Navy used in life vests. So maybe seaweed was a necessary alternative.
