What is this? It was on the water heater line.
Also,… is a saddle valve ok for a pressure (expansion) tank hook up??

It looks like a loop or recirculating pump. Saddle fittings are not allowed by most model codes.

Thanks Jeff. Dont see too many of these. Wonder how cost efficient these are.

Saddle Valves are like flat roofs, they are going to leak. It is just a matter of time.

Loop pumps are used, usually, to provide instant hot water to appliances such as sinks and showers. There is a pretty good article about these in the latest Fine Homebuilding.

the pump in the picture is probably a recirculation pump. those types of pumps should never be installed with the motor shaft in a vertical position like the one shown. the bearings are not made to carry a load in that direction and will wear out faster.
