The purple wire nut (when used with antioxidant cream) is UL approved. NEC 2005 allows for the use of UL approved electrical parts.
The CPSC, however, has condemned this splice (which the NEC is actually silent on) as unsafe due to the numerous fires that have resulted from their use.
There is no requirement to use anti-oxidant paste with this connector, and doing so would actually violate the manufacturer’s instructions. The connector is prefilled with the type and amount of compound required.
I used CopAlum up until about a year ago. I use other methods now, which do not include the Ideal #65 .

UL never approves anything they list or label the products that are inspected in accordance with their standards!
