WTF picture of the year

This gutter is overflowing with water and debris is sticking out, the roof covering below has moss and looks worn down. Aren’t gutters supposed to have downspouts? As many times as I’ve seen this, I’m starting to think I’m wrong, that this is not right.

That question varies with location and local AHJ requirements.

No, it’s not. Even if your area doesn’t require guttering, like anything else… if it’s installed, it must be installed properly.
Two options IMO… make proper repairs or remove it without replacement.
The obvious answer is not always the right one for the situation.

The end of the gutter is open. The water dumps out at the end and flows down to the next level. Anytime you direct water onto the roof surface, you will have extra wear in that area. The shingles appear never to dry out here; therefore, you have bio growth.

This is a prevalent configuration in my area. Typically, it is not much of a problem, though never ideal.

That needs correction.

That needs correction.

A potential solution.

Inspecting while raining always reveals- and this saturated section of roof is probably a north facing slope- so ya never drying out - especially this time of year.
