This is the reason why it is so important for home inspectors to unite. Without standing together HIs will be the kickball on the playground of inspections.
Actually, they will be the kids on the sidelines of the playground…watching the game go on without them…
What bills are those, Eric?
If I am reading HB 1109 correctly, it only deals with roof inspections. I guess that would include the roof cert portion of the 4 point too. Appears they took out engineers along with home inspectors.
You are correct…and how long do you think it will be before roofs are excluded for home inspectors?
The wind mit portion of the other bill effectively eliminates everyone except the wces.
I personally love how much the price has climbed on inspections sense approx 8100 new folks instantly became qualified to do them. Ain’t it been great?
It has for me I just raised my prices again!
Really…You’re doing insurance inspections stand alone now???
I know better than that. I was talking about what the OP was, Insurance Inspections
I believe any and all could do Home Inspections since the dawn of time and do not think all of the sudden 8000+ folks that COULD NOT do them all of the sudden could.
That is the case with insurance inspections. It used to be ONLY architects, Engineers, contractors could do them. Now basically anyone can as long as the insurance company or a contractor says so or it they are a licensed Home Inspector with additional training. Kind of Flooded the market INSTANTLY with folks that could do them. Worked out great for a bunch of guys that used to do them and now have a bunch of insta pros to do them for pennies on the dollar and they still get a cut. Hell the worst of the worst like DM and the likes just keep sucking the insurance companies as s es and agreeing to any ridiculous thing they want done and don’t raise their prices a bit. They just pass on the extra work to their Pee-ons and tell them tough sh i t, Instead of the old 4 points you used to knock out real quick you will now be an a a s s sucker and do the citizens form because we say so and if you don’t like it we got 100 more guys lined up to take your job. oh yeah and the rest of you guys who used to make a decent buck doing insurance inspections F you to because now that is what insurance companies “or at least the dumb a s s e s in the office” are beginning to think that is what is required ansd is the standard form. For the record there is NO standard 4 point inspection form and everyone of you that uses the citizens one or Nachi one are continuing screwing yourself. You shold have NEVER stopped making your own uniqe forms and it would not be expected so much. To mbad most of the fools out there are just SHEEP towing the company line and are feeling Yeah I’m a Licensed pro now. Now I’ll be respected. Wrong now you are considered just like every other Pi ss ant with the stupid piece of paper unless you distinguish yourself in some way clients understand lie being a Certified Master inspector. Without a way to stand out you sare “likely” competing with against a bunch of hacks by price-shoppers unless of course you are in some realtors pockets jumping through their hoops and kissing their a s ses for the privilege to do a written report like the STATE TELLS YOU what to do and when. Love that State Mandated SOP f-ing brilliant. Fools… I’ll stick with my Home Inspection Alternatives and leave that serious crap for you sheep that love the whole licensing program. You can have them all.
Eric,
Am I correct that I thought you kind of are pretty much yourself retired and just cherry picking good jobs when you come across them? Correct me if I am wrong but I thought you moved North and were not dependent on inspecting for your living at this stage in your life? How many full home inspections at those new prices are you doing on your average week? At least I hope I’m correct and that you are living the good life now as I know you have worked loing and hard and have earned it
Actually, I perform inspections for past clients and certain Realtors in Broward and Palm Beach. I have contacts up here and am building a specialty business. I do more consulting now.
For insurance inspections, I will do a stand alone one if it is a 4-point combined with a wm. Most don’t want to pay the price. Here I can do the insurance inspections and make a decent amount if I so choose.
I am entering the semi phase of my retirement program.
As to your previous post, it is just a rant.
I was successful before licensing and after.
Very interesting.
My business has grown, not that I was for HI licensing either. Our prices have been raised on the home inspection side over the last couple of years. Our stand alone insurance inspection prices have never changed since MSFH. We will be seeing our first insurance inspection(stand alone) price increase soon. I realize your area may be different but it does prove that my model does work.
Competing on price does not work. There will always be someone who will beat you. Many of those who do not understand the cost of business will go out of business and there will be someone behind them, there will always be more lowballers(same in construction).
Eric is correct about the home inspectors loosing home inspections because they can not do the insurance reports. I took market share early on because HIs refused to have the insurance inspections done at the same time.
The formula is simple: Take good care of your clients or someone else will.
What is plan B?
I gave up on it. Many home inspectors are crass and always paranoid. The moment they do not like someone else’s thoughts they attack. It is extremely confrontational and unproductive. I will be stepping down from the Chapter at the conference when we have elections. So if you know anyone who would like to run for the BOD, that would be the place to do it.
The simple and quick answer is F@BI. Their past leadership has insulted me too many times in drunken rants for me to work with them. As that leadership distances themselves I will consider working with them again.
I think I understand your delima… Unity, for lack of a better word can only be accomplished with forced standardization which will strip out the artistry and turn the profession into a commodity where we all appear equal. I’m sure that was the hope of licensing, but that won’t happen until we become like Realtors using the same standards & forms everyone else uses.
Standardization flies in the face of capitalism as we have all already witnessed in insurance inspections, I remember a time when wind mitigation inspections sold for $150, unheard of today. In any case, I have no intention of joining any group or association driving the trend to standardize the home inspection profession and create unity, best wishes on your next endeavor.
Plan b for me will be relaxing on my boat.
Prior to that, I will continue to help a few others who are trying to prevent certain things from happening to the profession. Things are already being done with regards to these latest bills, but it appears, there will always be attempts by some, to take a slice of the HI pie. Hopefully, some of the younger inspectors can get involved.
Joe just about all here who comment except for you and I seem all for Standardization and even try to push it “in my opinion” IE the Nachi 4 point form and other brilliant ideas
Why wouldn’t you want a standardized four-point? You already have a standardized wind mit and roof cert.
No only a wind mit is written by the OIR and “the Form” Roof cert is only for Citizens. Other companies may request a roof condition report but will accept anything with pictures and expected life from a professional. Do I really have to explain it to you I know better and so do you. Standardization makes everyone expect the same price from everyone offering it. If you say that is not true then you would be telling a lie and I do not believe you would do that.
Mike, you are wrong. Other professions have licenses. Therefore they should all be doing exactly same work. You are a stucco contractor. There are many other stucco contractors. You all do the same work. Yet you all have to bid on your jobs. Some of you are more expensive than others. Some of you are busier than others. Why? You are all doing the same thing. We all know, or at least should, know what the answers are.
