One of the most common items I find with decks in Northwest Indiana relates to the ledger board flashing. Many contractors install the deck ledger board over the vinyl siding or over the house wrap; they believe that the vinyl siding and house wrap serve as a suitable moisture barrier. Unfortunately, several years down the road, the moisture finds it way into the exterior wall and rots out the rim joist behind. Many of the local municipalities allow this practice and do not understand the importance of ledger board flashing.
